Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7 this year. For most people that means Friday the 4th through Monday the 7th on the coast, and it is the last long weekend of the season.
It is a different weekend from the Fourth of July, and better in most of the ways that matter. School is back in session across much of the country by early September, so the crowd thins and changes character. More couples. More people who have done this before. The Gulf sits around 80 to 82 degrees, which is as warm as it gets all year. Days run into the upper 80s and evenings settle into the mid 70s with a breeze off the water.
There will be a shower somewhere across the four days. There always is. It passes quickly and usually leaves the sky in better shape than it found it.
What is on
Baytowne Wharf runs its Art and Chalk Festival from Friday the 4th through Sunday the 6th, in the evenings. Artists work directly on the walkways around the lagoon, and the whole thing is washed away within days, which is a good deal of the appeal. Fine art vendors and craft stalls fill the village alongside them.
Sunday the 6th is the busy evening. Alys Beach has a free concert at the amphitheatre from six to eight. Seaside has one running from seven to eight thirty. The two overlap, and holiday traffic between the towns moves slower than the map suggests, so choose one rather than trying for both.
Earlier that same morning, the Rosemary Beach farmers market runs from nine until one. Seaside’s market is expected on the Saturday, though holiday schedules shift, so confirm before you go.
Over in Destin, HarborWalk Village holds its Labor Day concert celebration on the Sunday evening, with fireworks over the harbour to close it out. It is the biggest thing on the local calendar outside the Fourth of July. Event times on a holiday weekend are the first thing to move, so check each organiser’s own listing on the day.
The trouble with a holiday weekend
Anyone who has spent a Labor Day here knows the shape of it. Beach accesses fill early. Parking along 30A turns into a competitive sport. The drive between Rosemary Beach and Seaside, which is nothing on an ordinary Tuesday, becomes a genuine commitment on the Sunday of a holiday weekend.
The beach itself gets busy in the way that beaches do. You spend the morning claiming a patch of sand and the afternoon defending it.
None of that applies offshore.
Why the water is the better seat
Two hundred yards out, the holiday weekend disappears. The coastline looks the way it does in a photograph rather than the way it feels from a crowded beach access. You can see all of it at once, the white of Alys Beach, the rooflines of Rosemary, the long green run of dune between them, and there is nobody within a hundred feet of you who was not invited.

Late afternoon is the hour to be out there. September light on this coast is the best light of the year, softer and warmer than August, and the water tends to settle as the day cools. If you are only going out once, go out then.
A practical note on booking
Labor Day weekend fills early, and the Sunset Cruise fills first. If your dates are fixed, reserve now rather than deciding on the Thursday.
If your dates are not fixed, consider the Friday. Most of the weekend crowd arrives later in the day, the water is quieter, and you will still have the whole holiday ahead of you.

Summer does not really end here in September. It simply gets quieter, warmer in the water, and better looking in the evening. Labor Day weekend is the last time the coast will be busy until spring, and the best place to spend it is a few hundred yards off it.
